39 cats made a 6 hour flight from Florida to Pittsburgh with No Dog Left Behind Pilot Pete Lehmann. During a disaster the pressure is on shelters to clear space for incoming pets that were either displaced or surrendered by fleeing residents. What if you had lost everything and in the midst of the chaos you lost you pet? How would you find them? The answer is you would visit a shelter. In order for that to happen the animals that were already there need immediate evacuation.
We received a call from our friends at the Alachua County Humane Society. There were 39 cats in their facility and they desperately needed to make space so they could accept hurricane animals. 39 cats would need to fly to Pittsburgh and the pressure was on to place them all locally. No Dog Left Behind Executive Director Mary Kennedy Withrow and Operations Manager Rachel Logan worked the phones and while simultaneously planning another 100 animal rescue, made the impossible happen and found the best places for all 39 cats.
Without our incredible shelter partners none of this could have happened. We wish to thank Pittsburgh CAT, Animal Friends, In Care Of Cats, Paws Across Pittsburgh, Kitty Queen Cat Rescue, Angel Ridge Animal Rescue, and Two Ladies Four Paws Rescue for taking these special cats. Please, if you are interested in helping complete this story contact any of these shelters and make one of these cats your new best friend.
